Type
species:
Gripopteryx cancellata
(
Pictet, 1841
)
, by subsequent designation (
Illies 1963
).
Diagnosis.
The 10th abdominal tergum of males is characterized by relatively long lateral clefts that partially separate a subtriangular posterior sclerite (
Froehlich 1990
), its apex being simple and bent downwards (except in
G. e l i - sae
and
G. flinti
). The paraprocts of the genus are long, curved upwards, compressed throughout their length, and partially concave in their distal half. The apex of male epiproct is short and relatively broad, with a small row of minute teeth on its dorsal margin (
Froehlich 1990
). The epiproct is absent in
G. brasiliensis
and
G. serrensis
. Females have paraprocts with a small apicodorsal projection and the apex of the subgenital plate being thickened. The eggs are membranous and dome-shaped (
Froehlich 1990
). Nymphs are characterized by postero-median spines or warts on abdominal terga 1–9 and by a spine on tergum 10, when present, that may be long and curved or straight (
Froehlich 1990
).
