Distribution: North, Central and South America; from central Baja California Sur and Sonora, Mexico, to Tumbes, Peru, Pacific drainages; ( Nicaragua ) Ch, Ne, ER, PN, Ni (Pacific); 0–319 masl ; Per, Dia, Cat. Occurrence and conservation status: Nat; LC (2020), population trend unknown. Literature: Villa (1982: 227 ; detailed description, including illustrations and an identification key, and information on distribution and ecology), Carr & Giovannoli (1994: 111 , as A. tajasica —misidentification; brief description, including information on distribution and ecology), Bussing (1998: 398 ; brief description, including illustrations and an identification key, and information on distribution, with a map, and ecology), Angulo (2021: 36 ; listed, including information on distribution) and McMahan et al. (2021: 970 ; phylogenetic relationships, and information on distribution, with a map, and ecology). Remarks: Based on molecular data, McMahan et al. (2021) suggested the presence of two different lineages under the name A. transandeanus in the Pacific coast of Mexico and Central America. The boundary between the two lineages is the northern portion of the Costa Rican Pacific (Guanacaste) coast. Morphological studies are necessary to corroborate this and to properly diagnose both species.
