Diagnosis.
Diplommatina baliana
is characterized by a small-sized shell without distinct extensions of the peristome, a low columellar lamella and close-set, slightly oblique ribs.
Shell (

).
Dextral; spindle-shaped with conical early whorls and a (sometimes much) narrowed last whorl; with 5.75–6.75 whorls separated by a deep suture; protoconch smooth; teleoconch with slightly oblique ribs (36–60 on the penultimate whorl; fewer on the last whorl); usually with discernible spiral striae between the ribs; corneous; subtranslucent; last whorl rounded, with a ventral or ventrolateral right constriction; aperture almost circular, slightly angular at the transition from columellar to basal side; upper insertion of the peristome ascending towards aperture; insertions of the peristome connected by a distinct callus; peristome distinctly expanded, thickened, doubled; aperture with a weak thickening on the columella or columellar lamella missing; with a parietal lamella ventrolaterally left to ventrally inside last whorl; with a short spiral palatal fold in the middle of the whorl ventrally inside the last whorl and with a long radial palatal fold ventrally or ventrolaterally right; umbilicus closed; operculum thin, corneous, circular, paucispiral. Remarks.
Diplommatina baliana
differs from
D. cyclostoma
, with which it has been erroneously synonymized by
Vermeulen and Whitten (1998)
, in the smaller, more conical shell with more widely spaced ribs and usually with discernible spiral striae between the ribs.

There was a specimen of
D. auriculata
among the syntypes of
D. hortulana
Leschke. Therefore
, we designate a syntype (ZMH 83650,
Fig. 33
) as lectotype of
D. hortulana
to fix the name for the species figured by
Leschke (1914: fig. 10)
and van
Benthem
Jutting (1948
: fig. 49).
A comparison of the lectotype of
D. hortulana
(
Fig. 33
) with syntypes of
D. baliana
(NHMUK 20160045/2,
Fig. 34
) from Bali proved the synonymy of
D. hortulana
Leschke
with
D. baliana
Fulton. Fulton (1899)
reported
D. baliana
also from Sumba. Hereby, we designate the figured syntype from Bali (NHMUK 20160045/1,
Fig. 34
) as lectotype of
D. baliana
to fix the name for populations from Bali.
The identity of
D. cyclostoma
f.
minor
Möllendorff, 1897
(not Adams 1854) could not be clarified unambiguously, because the
type
material is missing (
Zilch 1953
). Its small size indicates that it does not belong to
D. cyclostoma
, but might be
D. baliana
.
The population from the Tanjung Lame in Ujung Kulon National Park in
Banten
(
Fig. 35
) differs from other populations of
D. baliana
in the last whorl that is much narrower than the penultimate whorl (similar as in
D. calcarata
and
D. tetragonostoma
) and the ventrolaterally right (instead of the usual ventral) position of the constriction of the last whorl and the radial palatal fold. However, some specimens from Teluk Peucang in Ujung Kulon National Park are intermediate with regard of the narrowing of the last whorl and the position of the constriction of the last whorl and the palatal folds (
Fig. 36
).
Vermeulen & Whitten (1998)
described variability of the position of the constriction of the last whorl also for populations from
Bali
. Thus, we classify the populations from Ujung Kulon National Park as
D. baliana
. Furthermore, there was one sinistral specimen among five dextral specimens in the sample from Tanjung Lame (
Fig. 35
).
At Sipahang Cave near Bogor (Cigudeg Village) a very large (
3.2 mm
high), elongate conical specimen without a distinct constriction of the last whorl and a simple peristome (
Fig. 37
) has been found among several typical
D. baliana
. We consider this an abnormality, perhaps caused by parasitic castration (Boettger, 1952).
Habitat.
In leaf litter, on deadwood, rocks and vegetation in shrubs, agroforest, plantations, in primary and secondary forests on calcareous and volcanic soils at
