Notes:—
Adamović (1904)
described
Teucrium helianthemoides
on the basis of the material previously collected by Kindl at Olympus in
June 1902
. The specimens were collected from alpine rocky grasslands. Indumentum density, the presence of two leaf forms, size of the terminal heads, the length of the pedicle, and the structure of the calyx were noted as the main differences from the closely related
T. montanum
. The illustration is published in the protologue together with the description. Subsequently,
Baden (1991)
proposed a new status and gave a new combination—
T. montanum
subsp.
helianthemoides
. The main difference between the two Greek forms is the characteristics of the indumentum:
T. montanum
ssp.
montanum
possesses greyish-pubescent stems with reflexed hairs, appressed-puberulent on the upper side and greyish-tomentose on lower sides of the leaves, and appressed-puberulent to subglabrous calyces, whereas
T. montanum
ssp.
helianthemoides
possesses white-pilose to velutinous stems with patent hairs, patent-pilose to the velutinous upper side and tomentose to lanate lower sides of the leaves, and patent-pilose calyces (
Baden 1991
). The original material was found in herbarium WU and it fits with the description provided in the protologue. We here designate the specimen deposited at WU (WU 0073104) as the
lectotype
of the name
T. helianthemoides
.
