Lellinger, Amer. Fern J. 77: 94. 1987 [1988]. = Alsophila bulligera Rosenst., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. 25: 57. 1928 . Range:Peru , Bolivia (CO, LP). Ecology: —Rare in perhumid montane rainforests, regular in the understory; 700–1400 m . Notes: —Belongs to a species complex around Cyathea pungens , which see for further discussion. Cyathea gibbosa (Klotzsch) Domin, Pteridophyta 262. 1929. = Cyathea kalbreyeri (Baker) Domin of auctt., non Lehnert (2014) . Range: —Andes from Venezuela to Bolivia (LP, SC); Guyana . Ecology: —Rare in warm montane rainforests, in the understory. Apparently restricted to sandstone and specific microclimatic conditions, thus occurrences are geographically remote, but where found plants can be ubiquituous; 750–900 m . Notes: —In a nomenclatural shuffling, the species long known as Cyathea kalbreyeri became C. gibbosa , and the species previously known as C. gibbosa was typified as C. farinosa (H.Karst.) Domin ( Lehnert 2014 ) . The true C. kalbreyeri is a slender-stemmed understory tree fern occurring in northern Colombia and probably adjacent Panama (F. Giraldo Gallego, pers. comm.; Lehnert et al. , unpublished data).
