Philippi (1852a: 53) , by stating “Betrachten wir indessen die von Lamarck citirte Figur der Encyclopädie als Typus seiner Art” [considering the figure of Lamarck in the Encyclopédie Méthodique as the type of his species], designated that specimen as the lectotype ( Code , Art. 74.5). Although fasciata of Schumacher was listed as a new name by Sherborn (1926: 2309), Schumacher (1817: 200) in fact treated fasciata (presumably of Lamarck) as the valid name of ampullacea Linnaeus , probably because he was a strong supporter of the Lamarckian rather than the Linnaean system (see the introduction to Schumacher’s work).
