Description (female lectotype ). Structural characters as in generic description, except: frons with muscle impressions indistinct ( Figs. 11–12 ); apical margin of maxillas not extended beyond apex of clypeus ( Fig. 11 ); clypeus, in lateral view, with a slight gibbosity medially ( Fig. 12 ); forewing with three anteapical cells, outer one distinct and closed, inner and middle ones open and visible only apically ( Fig. 13 ); hindleg femoral setal formula 2+2+0. Female genitalia: pygofer with five setae on posteroventral margin ( Fig. 19 ). Sternum VII approximately rectangular, wider than long, posterior margin emarginate, broadly excavated and posterolateral angles prominent and rounded; covered with microsetae, not strongly sclerotized ( Fig. 20 ). Sternum VIII absent. Valvulae I curved dorsally, apex slightly narrowed and rounded, with strigate sculptures reaching dorsal margin of median and apical thirds, and ventral margin of apical third ( Fig. 21 ). Valvulae II longer than pygofer, curved dorsally, fused throughout length, except on apical third ( Fig. 22 ); apical third: dorsal margin smooth, with rounded denticles only on distal portion, ventral margin without denticles ( Fig. 23 ); right valvula with narrow, sharp apex ( Fig. 24 ), left valvula with apex rounded and inner portion indented to receive right valvula apex; apparent ducts opening into pores near dorsal margin and apex ( Fig. 23 ). Valvulae III with apex rounded and distinct bristles throughout ventral margin ( Fig. 25 ). FIGURES 10–25. Coelana modesta (Baker, 1898) , 10–13 , 19–25 , female lectotype; 14–18 , male: 10 , head, pronotum and scutellum, dorsal view; 11 , head, frontal view; 12 , head, pronotum and scutellum, lateral view; 13 , forewing; 14 , pygofer and anal tube, lateral view; 15 , subgenital plates, ventral view; 16 , style, lateral view; 17 , styles and connective, dorsal view; 18 , aedeagus, lateral view; 19 , pygofer, lateral view; 20 , sternum VII, ventral view; 21 , valvula I, lateral view; 22 , valvula II, lateral view; 23 , apex of left valvula II, detail of the apical third; 24 , apex of right valvula II; 25 , valvula III, lateral view. Male externally as in female. Male genitalia: in lateral view, pygofer approximately rectangular, not narrowing toward apex, with large ventral hook basally and long oblique suture separating basal third from median and apical thirds; each inner dorsal process truncate at apex, with a single tooth ventrally; posterior margin rounded and macrosetae at apical third near ventral margin and apex ( Fig. 14 ). Subgenital plates slightly narrowed toward apex, each plate with length about three times basal width, and apex rounded with bristles on apical half ( Fig. 15 ); without apical tooth in lateral view. Styles short and thin, with bristles at apical third, and lateral margins without irregularities or undulations ( Figs. 16–17 ). Connective about half length of style, with anterior branches more sclerotized and narrow than stem ( Fig. 17 ). In lateral view, aedeagus enlarged and membranous on basal half; base with long ventral projection and short dorsal apodeme rounded and not projected; with shaft extended posterad, narrowed toward apex, apical third slightly curved dorsally, with apex truncate and gonopore apical ( Fig. 18 ). Membranous anal tube, with irregular ventral margin and pair of long ventral processes medially, with rounded and distinct apices ( Fig. 14 ). Color stramineous to yellow, with median small black spot at coronal apex ( Figs. 10–12 ); head, in frontal view, entirely yellow, without markings, except for coronal black spot that extends to base of frons ( Fig. 11 ); crown yellow, also without markings, except for the black spot at apex ( Fig. 10 ). Pronotum pale yellow with posterior and lateral margins slightly darker, dark yellow. Scutellum yellow, with a pair of dark yellow to orange triangular lateral markings and a longitudinal central band of the same color, narrowed on basal half, enlarged apically ( Fig. 10 ). Forewing hyaline, yellowish, with yellow veins and a small brown stain at base of appendix, near apex of claval suture ( Fig. 13 ). Hindwing yellowish to whitish with yellow veins. Legs yellow with concolorous setae. FIGURES 26–29. Primary types, dorsal and lateral view: 26–27, male holotype of Coelana drakei Kramer, 1964 ; 28– 29, female lectotype of Neocoelidia modesta Baker, 1898 . Scales = 1.0 mm. Geographical distribution. Argentina , Bolivia and Brazil . Specimens examined. Female lectotype [ here designated ] (USNM), with following labels: [ BRAZIL :] Chapada [there are many states from Brazil with cities or localities named "Chapada", so it is very difficult to know exactly where the specimen was collected]/ Aug[ust]/ Coll[ector] C.F. Baker [printed white labels]/ Neocoelidea [ sic ] modesta B[aker] [handwritten red label]/ cotype nº [?] USNM [printed red label; lectotype label added by author]; ibidem , June/ Coll[ector] C.F. Baker , 2 female paralectotypes (USNM) [ paralectotypes labels added by author]; BOLIVIA [no other data]/ # 1141/ Coelana modesta ( Baker ) , Kramer 1963 [det.], 1 male (USNM); ARGENTINA : Misiones , Loreto, 03.xii.1931 , A.A. Ogoblin [leg.]/ Neocoelidia modesta Bak., P.W. Oman det., 1 male [designated as allotype by DeLong, 1953 ] (USNM). Lectotype condition. Thorax ventrally glued to a triangle. Left antennal flagella with apical half missing, and right one entirely missing. Left foreleg missing starting from the trochanter, and right one with tarsus missing; right midleg entirely missing, and left one with tarsus missing; left hindleg with tarsus missing. Right forewing with clavus slightly separated from the remainder of the wing. Abdomen dissected. Remaining parts in good condition. Variations. The small spot on the coronal apex is smaller and brown in one female and one male; the clypeus lacks a slight gibbosity medially, in lateral view; the pronotum and scutellum are entirely yellowish, without distinct markings or bands, and the forewing lacks the brown stain at the base of the appendix. Comments. Baker (1898) described Neocoelidia modesta from three females, type locality Chapada, Brazil , collected in June and August. The syntypes were deposited originally in the Herbert H. Smith collection, and now are preserved in the United States National Museum (USNM), Washington, D.C., USA . To avoid future confusion over the identity of this species and the type series, a lectotype is selected. The remaining specimens from the type series are paralectotypes . Coelana modesta can be separated from other species of the genus by the characters of male genitalia, especially the ones given in the diagnosis.
