HOLOTYPE : AMNH 226534 , adult male, collected on Rennell Island , Solomon Islands , on 22 May 1930 , by Hannibal Hamlin , William F. Coultas , and W.J. Eyerdam on the Whitney South Sea Expedition (no. 40158). COMMENTS: Mayr cited the AMNH number of the holotype in the original description but did not give the number of specimens examined. The following specimens from Rennell taken by the Whitney Expedition are paratypes of sanfordi : males, AMNH 226364–226375 , 226528 , 226529 , 226531– 226533 , 226536 ; females, AMNH 226376– 226379 , 226530 , 226535 . Of these, AMNH 226365 and 226379 were exchanged to ZMB in 1936, AMNH 226370 was exchanged to USNM in 1932, and AMNH 226374 was exchanged to BBM in 1932 . The expedition vessel, France , anchored in Lughu ( 5 Kunggava or Kungava) Bay, 11.40S , 160.17E (USBGN, 1974b), during the time spent on Rennell.
