Quoy & Gaimard (1834) described it from New Guinea . It has previously been reported from South Africa , the Red Sea, and elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific region but not from the central Indian Ocean ( Kilburn & Rippey 1982 ; Röckel et al . 1995 ).
