Imago (Fig. 52): Wingspan 13–21mm . Head pale ochreous; labial palpus upcurved, whitish, segment 3 almost as long as segment 2, segment 1 with scales projecting beneath; maxillary palpus whitish, tapered to a fine point; antenna dull ochreous, 2/3 length of forewing. Thorax and tegulae yellow. Forewing costa brownish for first 2/5, base pale yellow; an indistinct brownish submedian fascia, followed by some whitish scaling; a yellow median fascia; a dark brownish spot on costa just beyond middle; outer half of wing chiefly yellow; a pale fuscous wedge from dorsum beyond middle, two costal strigulae, whitish becoming silver grey and edged brown; a silver grey tornal spot; black dots along termen; terminal cilia pale fuscous. Hindwing basal half whitish with an obscure brownish fascia; curved yellow median fascia, beyond this white scattered with fuscous scales, bounded by a double dark fuscous subterminal line; four black terminal eye-spots, 1 and 2 with a silver bar near the top, 4 with silver grey above and beyond and a dark fuscous line above forming a partial third subterminal line. Legs pale ochreous, brown above joints especially of foreleg. Abdomen yellowish. Male genitalia (Fig. 112): Uncus drawn out to a blunt tip; gnathos 4/5 uncus, rows of teeth along either side of apex; valva with costa undulating, dorsum straight, near apex a specialised seta arises from a raised base, it curves gently inwards and then exands into a flattened oval plate; anellus with a pair of blunt points either side, a cluster of small spines around apex; aedeagus clothed with small spines around tip, two long slender cornuti in the vesica and a small one near apex. Female genitalia (Fig. 159): Ostium fairly broad, antrum long and membranous, but becoming restricted and containing strongly contorted sclerotisation before a weak colliculum; ductus bursae with a sclerotised plate bearing a longitudinal ridge; corpus bursae ovate, about half of the surface covered with fine scobination. Tympanal organs: Venulae almost parallel, diverging towards tympanal organs, tympani long and broad. Diagnosis: The species is distinguished by the white arc in the upper part of eyespot 1 on the hindwing. Biology: Unknown, occurs in rivers. Adults taken in i–viii, x–xii. Probably continuously brooded. Distribution: Not uncommon throughout East, West and Southern Africa. Material examined: Holotype South Africa : Annshaw ( BMNH ).
