BIOGEOCAL: stn DW 307, 20°35’S , 166°55’E , 470-480 m , 1 dd ( holotype , Fig. 21). — MUSORSTOM 6: stn DW 392, 20°47’S , 167°05’E , 340 m , 1 dd (Fig. 22). DISTRIBUTION. — Central Loyalty Ridge , shells in 340-470 m . DESCRIPTION. — Shell biconical, solid, opaque. Protoconch paucispiral, small, bulging, eroded. Spire rather high, conical, whorls flat to weakly convex. Aperture narrow, oblique, parallel sided, straight. Base tapering. Outer lip moderately thick, straight, oblique, shoulder sloping, slightly protruding, weakly angled, outer edge nearly straight over anterior half, very weakly concave, outer margin rather wide, thick, slightly bevelled, stepped, inner border oblique, straight, bearing 12 very small, blunt, low denticles. Four thin, oblique columellar plaits, lowest one arched, upper 3 simple, decreasing in size posteriorly, a small pleat above fourth plait. Colour dirty yellowish (faded and stained). Dimensions: 4.25 x 2.10 mm . Radula unknown. REMARKS. — The shell morphology of Serrata lifouana is somewhat similar to that of S. occidentalis (Fig. 13), which occurs widely off the west side of the New Caledonia mainland. Serrata lifouana differs from S. occidentalis in its smaller size, its more biconical shell outline, its more pointed spire, its thinner columellar plaits and its narrower outer lip with smaller denticles. Despite its smaller size, its more thickened outer lip and its more angled shoulder, there is little doubt that the specimen from MUSORSTOM 6 stn DW 392 (Fig. 22) is S. lifouana . ETYMOLOGY. — From the type locality of the species, situated in the vicinity of Lifou Island , Loyalty Archipelago .
