Carnivora
The known carnivore fauna of the Yavarí-
Ucayali
interfluve includes 16 species in five families—
Canidae
,
Felidae
,
Mustelidae
, and
Procyonidae
—and it seems unlikely that any additional species will be found in the region. The Matses recognize and name all of the local carnivores, and experienced hunters are familiar with the principal ecobehavioral traits of most species (
table 8
).
