Members of the genus Hydrosmecta can be distinguished from other athetine genera by the combination of the following characters: body very small and slender, parallel-sided and flattened dorso-ventrally; head about as large as or larger than pronotum; eye shorter than temple; antenna long and slender, reaching about the middle of elytra; antennomere 3 shorter than 2; mandible long and slender, right one with distinct internal tooth; prementum without pseudopore or with a few pseudopores in median region; elytron relatively long, distinctly longer than pronotum; abdominal tergites II–III without anterior macroseta, tergite VII distinctly longer than VI ( Benick & Lohse 1974 ; Yosii & Sawada 1976 ; Ashe 2001 ). Distribution. Worldwide (except Australia ). Remarks. All examined specimens of South Korean species were collected near streams and rivers.
