Diagnosis.
O. speciosa
is almost identical to
O. obtusa
on wing pattern, but usually has a more arcuate postmedial fascia on the male forewing. The male genitalia differ in the much broader valva, the broader and shorter uncus, and the slightly broader median process of the gnathos. The most distinctive difference is in the right sacculus, which bears two pointed processes, but only one in
O. obtusa
. The male genitalia of
O. speciosa
share with
O. brunnea
the short uncus, broad median process of the gnathos, and short and broad valva, but the saccular processes are more developed. In addition, the lateral processes on the posterior margin of sternite 8 are longer than in
O. brunnea
.
Distribution.
China
(Henan, Hubei, Fujian, Sichuan, Tibet),
Myanmar
.
Remarks.
Bryk (1943)
described
O. speciosa
based on material from
Myanmar
.
Watson (1961)
subordinated it as a subspecies of
Psiloreta obtusa
. Later (
Watson 1967
), he revised it as
O. obtusa speciosa
, synonymized the genus
Psiloreta
with
Oreta
, and added Fujian and Sichuan (Moupin, Tsien-tsuen, N. Chengdu) in the distribution of the species. At the same time, he described
O. obtusa dejeani
from Siao-lou in Sichuan, which is close to the above localities. He also noted that “some Sichuan examples originated from localities close to those recorded for
dejeani
. The topography of this region is, however, one of steep-sided valleys which may serve to isolate
speciosa
from
dejeani.
”. In the collection of IZCAS, specimens of
speciosa
and
dejeani
are present from Hanmi in Mêdog, and Aniqiao and Yarang in Mêdog, the distance between which being only
12 km
. If
speciosa
were regarded as a subspecies of
obtusa
, this would effectively be a sympatric distribution of two subspecies. Since to substantial differences in the male genitalia of these two taxa, we conclude that
O. obtusa speciosa
should be separated as a distinct species. The
holotype
of
O. hyalina
is identical to that of
O. speciosa
on external features, and shows only minor differences in the male genitalia (the slenderer median process of the gnathos and longer saccus), and is therefore here synonymized with the latter species.
