Tiron australis Stebbing, 1908: 79–81 , pl. XXXVIII. Tiron australis .— Griffith 1974 , brief diagnosis; Lörz & Coleman 2013 , p. 126 ; Cadien 2014 , p. 11 . Type material. Syntypes . South Africa . 1 ♀ , 8 mm , BMNH 1928.12 .1.2018. 1 ♂ , 6 mm , off East London , 33˚9’30”S, 28˚3’00”E, 47 fathoms [= 86 m ]. Material not seen . Remarks . Stebbing reported a female and a male. For the latter he provided a habitus illustration, but he did not designate a holotype . Dr. Lauren Hughes of the BMNH has advised me of the following status regarding Stebbing’s type material. The undissected female is in the BMNH wet collection. This suggests that most detailed illustrations were dissected from the male syntype . The remains of the syntype male, and especially slides, cannot at present be considered lost because major work on the large Stebbing collection continues. For that reason the two specimens are left as syntypes .
