Cleome pentaphylla
Linnaeus
,
Flora Jamaicensis
: 18. 1759
.
"Habitat [in Jamaica.]" RCN: 4894.
Lectotype
(Iltis in
Brittonia
12: 284. 1960): Herb. Linn. No. 850.4 (
LINN
)
.
Current name:
Cleome gynandra
L.
(
Capparaceae
).
Note:
Although Fawcett & Rendle (
Fl. Jamaica
3: 229. 1914) indicated material in LINN as type, they did not distinguish between sheets 850.2, 850.3 and 850.4 (which are evidently not part of a single gathering so Art. 9.15 does not apply). Some authors, including Elffers & al. (in Hubbard & Milne-Redhead,
Fl. Trop. E. Africa,
Capparidaceae
: 18. 1964), have believed this to be a superfluous name for
C. gynandra
L. (1753)
, stemming from the mistaken belief that
C. pentaphylla
dated from 1763 (
Sp. Pl.
, ed. 2, 2: 938). The two names are, however, heterotypic synonyms.
