All extant cicadas except for the two Australian hairy cicadas of the genus Tettigarcta White, 1845 are members of the family Cicadidae . Species of Cicadidae are distinguished by the pronotum being smaller than the mesonotum, the presence of a distinctive cruciform elevation, fore wing anal veins 2 and 3 are fused, males generally possess timbal organs and an abdominal resonating chamber, tympana present in both sexes, male sternite VII is shielded ventrally by the genitalia, and the male pygofer has basal lobes ( Moulds 2005 ).
