Lacerta
Linnaeus, 1758
The composite genus
Lacerta
that previously contained a majority of species of
Lacertinae
was definitely split into several genera by
Arnold
et al.
(2007)
. Based on their detailed study supported by genetic and morphological data the genus today consists only of the following species:
Lacerta agilis
,
L. bilineata
,
L. media
,
L. pamphylica
,
L. schreiberi
,
L. strigata
,
L. trilineata
,
and
L. viridis
. The enigmatic species,
L. mostoufii
Baloutch
(type locality in the Dasht-e Lut), never seen again since its description was retracted from the Iranian lizard fauna by
Ahmadzadeh
et al.
(2013a)
after
in den Bosch (1999)
and
Eiselt (1995)
brought evidence that the only known specimens were lost (
holotype
) or misidentified
D. praticola
(
paratype
) and that the description was probably based on material originated from different parts of
Iran
that was mixed-up by Baloutch with collections from Dasht-e Lut (
Baloutch 1977
;
Anderson 1999
, p. 239).
