Range.
CANADA: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba (sw), Northwest Territories (sw), Ontario (Manitoulin Island), Quebec (Gaspe Peninsula), Saskatchewan, Yukon (s). UNITED STATES: Alaska (se interior border), Arizona (n), California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada, New Mexico (n), Oregon, South Dakota (w), Utah, Washington, Wyoming, with outlying populations in Nebraska (w), Oklahoma (panhandle), Michigan (Isle Royal) and sporadic in Illinois and Maine, Massachusetts.
The geographic range of
P. secunda

. Subspecies
secunda
occurs throughout the species range and also reaches into Baja California Norte, Mexico (Fig.
2A
). The range of subspecies
juncifolia
is almost completely within that of subsp.
secunda
, except for several scattered localities in Arizona, New Mexico and Nebraska; it is absent from Mexico and mostly absent from the Pacific Coast and coastal mountains (Fig.
2B
). The ranges of varieties are broadly overlapping within their subspecies. Both subspecies have disjunct populations in the Patagonian Andes of Argentina and Chile.
