Joined vertical fins and loose, transparent, scaleless skin; peritoneum black; horizontal mouth; lower jaw not prolonged; vomer with 2–7 fangs; pectoral fin peduncle short, as long as high; 3–4 long rakers on anterior gill arch; dorsal fin rays 92–118, anal fin rays 61–78 and pectoral fin rays 17–20; precaudal vertebrae 28–33; total vertebrae 77–87; sagittal otolith rather large, oval and thin; penis partly covered ventrally by genital hood that ends in a medially placed clasper; paired claspers absent in both sexes. Species. Only the type species is known.
