Smith (1941a) placed Rhabdosoma guttulatum Cope in synonymy with G. chalybeus , as R. guttulatum agrees with the descriptions of G. chalybeus supplied by Wagler (1830) and Peters (1859) . Downs (1967: 36–40) tentatively accepted this concept of G. chalybeus while detailing the confusing taxonomic history of this species.
