Amphithrax currently includes 9 species in both sides of the Americas plus the eastern Atlantic A. caboverdianus (Türkay, 1986) ( Windsor & Felder, 2017 ) . Herbst (1790: 248) referred to Cancer aculeatus (currently A. aculeatus ) as “a very rare American crab”, with no further detail as to the locality. The type locality “America” can be narrowed down to an area between Florida and Venezuela , which is the known range of this species (Florida Key, Bahamas , western Gulf of Mexico and from Cuba to Venezuela ).
