"Habitat in India." RCN: 5366. Lectotype (Wijnands, Bot. Commelins : 161. 1983): Herb. Clifford: 360, Clitoria 1 (BM-000646600) . Generitype of Clitoria Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot. : 176. 1929). Current name: Clitoria ternatea L. ( Fabaceae : Faboideae ). Note: Fawcett & Rendle ( Fl. Jamaica 4: 47. 1920) treated material in LINN and in Herb. Hermann ( BM ) as type. Verdcourt (in Milne-Redhead & Polhill, Fl. Trop. E. Africa, Leguminosae 4: 515. 1971), followed by several other authors, indicated material in Herb. Hermann 3: 13, 20; 4: 49 ( BM ) as syntypes, but gave no indication of intending to lectotypify the name. Fantz (in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 67: 592. 1980) indicated 902.1 (LINN) as type but this lacks a Species Plantarum number (i.e. "1" ), was a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name. Wijnands (who chose Clifford material) appears to have been the first to make an explicit type choice.
