Massicyta propinqua (Brauer) sensu Hardy 1920: 47 [incorrect combination]. Diagnosis . Antennae relatively elongate, flagellomere VIII deeply plumose distally, flagellomeres IV–VII all short and approximately equal in length; face round, yellow with erect, white setae; scutum black; scutellum yellow; male abdomen strongly petiolate; male occiput black; hind basitarsus black. Redescription . Body length = 8.0–10.0 mm. Head . Black and yellow; frons rounded (especially in female), yellow with black suffusion dorsally around ocellar tubercle; face broadly rounded, yellow with erect, white setae; parafacial yellow with narrow margin of silver pubescence along eye; ocellar tubercle black; postocular ridge yellow, highly carinate in female, not carinate in male; occiput flat, black, covered with white setal pile (longer in male); antenna (length = 3.0 mm) with scape and pedicel and flagellomeres I–V dark yellow with dark microtrichia, flagellomeres VI–VIII black, flagellomeres V–VII relatively short and combined length equal to length of flagellomere I, ratio of length of flagellomere VII to VIII is 1: 18, flagellomere VIII elongate and deeply plumose with microtrichia. Thorax . Black; scutum with recurved, white or yellow setal pile; anepisternum with broad whitishyellow margin dorsally and posteriorly; scutellum yellow; coxae black or suffused with yellow; rest of legs yellow and black, femora and tibiae with broad black band in apical half, tarsi black; hind tibia and tarsus longer and thicker than other legs; haltere yellow; wing slightly infuscate anteriorly, venation dark, pale anteriorly toward wing base; pterostigma light brown. Abdomen . Male abdomen narrow, strongly petiolate basally, segments 2–3 narrower than scutellum, segments 4–5 abruptly widened and equal to width of scutum, black with yellow margin laterally; segment 1 with lateral flange well developed; female abdomen wider, black, with yellow laterally on tergites 3–5. Male genitalia. Epandrium similar to other species except more convex in profile; gonocoxites quadrangular with triangular posterolateral processes; gonostylus bilobed and relatively large; phallus relatively elongate and narrow with medial lobe only slightly longer and broader than lateral lobes. Female genitalia. Not dissected. Comments . This species is very similar to L. propius sp. n. and L. pictum based on the similar shape of the male genitalia, especially the shape of the gonocoxites and the triangular posterolateral processes and well-developed gonostyli. The male abdomen is strongly narrowed and petiolate basally. Lagenosoma propinquum is distributed throughout eastern Queensland .
