Arundo vallatoria
Linnaeus
,
Herbarium Amboinense
: 15. 1754
,
nom. inval.
Type not relevant.
Current name:
Phragmites karka
(Retz.) Steud.
(
Poaceae
).
Note:
Veldkamp (in
Blumea
37: 232-233. 1992) has argued that "
Arundo vallatoria Pluk.
", from the right-hand column of names in the thesis
Herbarium Amboinense
(1754: 15), is a valid Linnaean binomial based on
Rumphius'
4: t. 5, and an earlier name for the plant known as
Phragmites karka
Retz. He
therefore made a new combination for it as
P. vallatoria
(Pluk. ex L.) Veldk. However
, it seems clear that Linnaeus was merely citing "
A. vallatoria, Pluk., Mant.
28" as a synonym of
Rumphius'
plant, the binomial form of
Plukenet's
name being merely a coincidence. Apart from the reprint of the thesis (
Amoen. Acad.
4: 115. 1759), Linnaeus never used the name again, and it is in any case invalid (see Art. 34.1, Ex. 2).
