Hyidiothrips guangdongensis
sp. n.
Figs. 1–8
Description
Female microptera (Figs 1–5).
Color:
Body more or less uniformly dark brown; metanotum and lateral margins of abdominal segments II to VII somewhat darker; margins of thorax and lateral margins of abdomen with red hypodermal pigments; tarsi and apices of tibiae yellow to yellowish brown; antennal segment I brown, segment II paler and yellowish, the remaining segments dark brown; major body setae yellowish brown.
Head:
almost as long as broad (exclusive of preocular part), head projecting in front of eyes; dorsum of head distinctly reticulated (Fig. 1); postocular setae long and curved near tip; ocelli present; postocellar seta longer than diameter of posterior ocellus; compound eye well developed, as long as half the length of head. Antennae sevensegmented, morphological segments III and IV completely fused (Fig. 4), segments IV and VII subequal in length; segment III with 3 sensecones, middle one short, outer 2 curved, segments IV and V each with two, segment VI with one; length/width of segments: I 0.67, II 1.01, III 1.50, IV 1.31, V 1.82, VI 3.00, VII 5.00.
Pronotum:
longer than head, 1.1 times as long as head in
holotype
(Fig. 1); anteroangular setae and epimeral setae simply expanded, anteromarginal setae curved as postocular setae, posteroangular setal apices strongly asymmetric; epimeral sutures incomplete; pronotum with a transverse median groove.
Mesonotum
: with transverse lines of sculpture anteriorly.
Metanotum
: reticulated anteromedially, smooth posteriorly.
Fore femora
: each with a spine situated at anterior third of interior margin.
Fore wing remnant
: (Fig. 2) about
25µm
long with 3 stout setae, apices strongly asymmetric.
Abdomen
: pelta of abdominal tergite I distinct; median sclerite separated from anterior sclerite, posterior sclerite divided into two lateral plates (Fig. 3). Posterior sclerite bearing a pair of campaniform sensilla; lateral margins of tergites II–VII each with a pair of long setae as pronotal posteroangular setae; III–VII each with a pair of long sigmoid wingretaining setae, a pair of minute straight setae; B1 setae of tergite IX blunt, B2 and B3 setae sharply pointed (Fig. 5).
Tube
: about as long as head, terminal setae as long as tube.
Measurements of
holotype
female in µm. Total distended body length 835. Head total length 60, from anterior margin of eyes 50, width 46; eye length 20, width 19; distance between hind ocelli 10. Postocular setae length 50. Pronotum median length 69. Forewing length 25. Tube length 62, basal width 30, apical width 18. Antennal segments I–VII length (width) as follows: 10(15); 19(18); 38(25); 21(16); 25(14); 15(5); 19(4).
Male microptera (Figs 6–8). Body color slightly paler than female, but structure similar. Eyes reduced; ocelli absent (Fig. 6). Wing remnant with two setae with apices strongly asymmetric (Fig. 7). Pelta as Figure 8; tergites III–VII without long wingretaining setae.
Measurements of
paratype
male in µm. Total distended body length 438. Head total length 47, from anterior margin of eyes 35, width 47. Pronotum median length 57. Tube length 41. Antennal segments I–VII length (width) as follows: 9(13); 14(14); 31(23); 16(15); 19(13); 11(8); 17(4)

Remarks
The new species is somewhat similar to
Hyidiothrips japonicus
Okajima
in appearance, but can be distinguished from the latter by the following features: (1) usually micropterous; (2) length of pronotum longer than total length of head; (3) antennal segment I brown, segment II yellowish, the remaining segments dark brown; (4) median sclerite of pelta blunt posteriorly, separated from anterior sclerite, posterior sclerites distinctly divided into two lateral plates.
