Manayunkia aestuarina (Bourne, 1883)
Notes
Questionable status. In the Mediterranean only reported from Greece (
Kisseleva 1961
,
Diapoulis and Bogdanos 1983
). Both Greek records are from a fully marine environment and therefore considered questionable by
Arvanitidis (1994)
, as the species usually occurs in brackish waters. However,
Harris (1970)
reports the species from non-brackish environments in the British Isles and assumes that it can tolerate full salinity at least during certain stages of its life cycle. Based on the geographic range of
Manayunkia aestuarina
, the Greek records must nevertheless be considered uncertain. Undescribed species of
Manayunkia
exist in Greece (
Chintiroglou et al. 2004
) and the genus needs further study in the region.
