Subfamily
Fusininae
Wrigley, 1927
Until recently the genus
Fusinus
s.l
.
was used as a catch-all category to contain several hundred living and fossil species of
Fusininae
. According to
Vermeij & Snyder (2018)
, 13 new genera have been introduced between
2003 and 2018
to accommodate many of the more atypical species previously placed in
Fusinus
, and most recently
Vermeij & Snyder (2018)
introduced ten more genera to bring more precise organization to many of the larger species that still remained in
Fusinus
s.l
.
However, although Vermeij & Snyder assigned many species among
Fusinus
s.s
.
and their genera, many other speciess were not dealt with and must remain in
Fusinus
s.l
.
until such time that this is done. Three Guianan species formerly placed in
Fusinus
were reclassified by Vermeij & Snyder in their new genera
Lyonsifusus
and
Aristofusus
.
We retain other Guianan species not reclassified by Vermeij & Snyder in the genus
Fusinus
s.l
.
Two other new genera of Vermeij and Snyder containing species mentioned in the following accounts are
Africofusus
(
type
species
Fusus ocellifer
Lamarck, 1816
) and
Goniofusus
(
type
species
Fusus dupetitthouarsi
Kiener, 1840
).
