USA (Florida), Mexico , Cuba , Jamaica , Dominican Republic , Puerto Rico , E Less- er Antilles, Panama ( Panama Canal area, San Blas Is.), Colombia , Venezuela , Guyana and Brazil from Pará to Rio de Janeiro (e.g. Gore 1974, 1982; Rodríguez et al. 2005 ; Lira et al. 2007; Ferreira & Melo 2016 ; Diez & Lira 2017 ; Ferreira 2019 ). Ecology . Intertidal and (more common) subtidal, presently known depth range: 0–82 m ; associated with sponges, e.g. loggerhead sponge, Spheciospongia vesparia (Lamarck) (Gore 1974) . Remarks . Despite the fact that P. ackleianus is one of the most widespread species of the genus in the western Atlantic, there are only a few records of the species from Panama , with no recently collected material available to the authors. Living crabs are pale brown with whitish patches on the carapace and P1–P4, and a longitudinal dorsal white line on the carapace ( Werding 1977 ).
