Distribution
. West Atlantic:
Cuba
, E and S Lesser Antilles;
Panama
(Punta Galeta, Bahía de Caledonia),
Colombia
and
Venezuela
(
Rodríguez
et al
. 2005
;
Diez & Lira 2017
;
Poupin 2018
;
Hiller & Werding 2019
; present study). East Pacific:
Mexico
,
Costa Rica
(including Cocos I.),
Colombia
,
Ecuador
(including
Galápagos
) (
Haig 1960
;
Rodríguez
et al.
2005
;
Lazarus-Agudelo & Cantera-Kintz 2007
;
García-Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez 2009
;
Hiller & Werding 2019
).
Ecology
. Intertidal and shallow subtidal, known depth range:
0–20 m
; rocky shores and reefs, under boulders, also in coral rocks and on “sand and shell bottoms” in deeper water (
Haig 1960
;
Gore 1982
).
Remarks
. Despite having a wide distribution in the tropical eastern Pacific (
type
locality: Galápagos) and the Caribbean Sea,
P. tonsorius
does not appear to be a common species. Although
Hiller & Werding (2019)
seem to have confirmed the status of
P. tonsorius
as a single species with transisthmian distribution, the average distance between the populations from the eastern Pacific and western Atlantic in the 16S rRNA gene fragment was 4.8%, which is rather significant (see also
Hiller
et al
. 2006
: fig. 3). They also noted an overlapping intraspecific variation in the colour pattern on each side of the Isthmus of
Panama
, with the more common brown colour morph and the less common bluish colour morph (
