Synopsis of Epipleoneura (Zygoptera, Coenagrionidae, “ Protoneuridae ”), with emphasis on its Brazilian species Author Pessacq, Pablo text Zootaxa 2014 3872 3 201 234 journal article 10.11646/zootaxa.3872.3.1 47ff6515-876a-4d83-b631-64004e51c683 1175-5326 230974 72ACE4FF-9A41-4D26-A201-01E020439899 Epipleoneura westfalli Machado, 1986 ( Figs. 16 , 43 , 58 ) Epipleoneura westfalli Machado 1986 : 113 –118, figs. 1–3 (new species, description of male and female, illustration of male S 10 in lateral and posterior view, female prothorax in dorsal view, type material at ABMM). Lencioni 2005 : 185 , figs. 115 a–c (references, type locality, distribution, described stages, reproduction of illustrations of male S 10 in lateral and posterior view and female prothorax in dorsal view). Garrison et al. 2010 : 352 , 354, fig. 2338 (included in list of species, illustrations of epiproct in posterior view). Pessacq et al. 2012 : 5 (included in list of Brazilian Protoneuridae , new record for Maranhão State). Specimens examined. 2 ♂ , 1 ♀, Brazil , Maranhão State, route São Luiz-Teresina (Teresina: 05º05’31”S , 42º48’12”W ), km 340, 29 vii 1972 . Diagnosis. The cercus, epiproct, and genital ligula of this species are similar to those of E. kaxuriana , E. machadoi and E. ottoi ; for descriptions and further comments see under those species. The epiproct is strikingly similar to the atypical epiproct of a few specimens of E. machadoi from Baixo Guandu River ( Fig. 67 e), from which it can be distinguished by the smaller inner-basal teeth in E. westfalli , developed as a big triangular teeth or lobe in E. machadoi . The epiproct with divergent and curved branches characteristic of this species is also present in E. humeralis , but the genital ligula of these species is clearly different. The female posterior margin of pronotum ( Fig. 58 ) has an erect flat structure with a rounded lobe on each side and a deep U cleft between them, which further differentiates it from E. kaxuriana , E. machadoi , and E. ottoi , but is similar to the bilobed margin of pronotum of E. humeralis . Distribution. Northern Brazil in Maranhão and Rondônia States ( type locality, Ji Paraná, Rondônia State, about 10°52'51"S 61°56'31"W ). Notes. Some variation was observed in the epiproct of this species; as mentioned by Machado (1986) , the branches are divergent and with apex acute or slightly divergent with stout apex.
