Distribution in Afghanistan : Kept in aquaculture facilities, but not recorded in the wild.—General distribution: South Asia: Ganges River basin, Pakistan , India , Nepal , Bangladesh and Myanmar ; introduced elsewhere.—Habitat: It is the natural inhabitant of freshwater sections of the rivers, is a bottom feeder, and prefers to feed on plant matter, including decaying vegetation.
