M. sangaica was originally described from Shanghai, and the nominotypical subspecies is only known from China and Vietnam ( Arita & Gorbunov, 1995a , Špatenka et al . 1999 , Arita & Kallies, 2000 ). The subspecies nipponica Arita & Yata, 1987 occurs in Japan. Several specimens were collected while visiting white flowering trees along a river valley.
