Genus
Philaenus
Stål, 1864
The species of this genus include the most polymorphic of Auchenorrhyncha (
Drosopoulos, 2003
,
Drosopoulos et al., 2010
). Eight species are now recognized, including some that have been described by careful study of the widely distributed
Philaenus spumarius
(L.) (e.g.
Abdul-Nour & Lahoud, 1995
;
Drosopoulos & Remane, 2000
;
Remane & Drosopoulos, 2001
).
Tishechkin (2013)
described two new
Philaenus
species from
Iran
, but he did not find
Ph. spumarius
among the specimens he studied.
