Mouth terminal; premaxilla and dentary with 4 teeth, no maxillary teeth. Lateral line with 32-36 pored scales; transverse series above and below lateral line with 4 or 4½ scale rows. Dorsal fin with 12, pectoral fin with 14-16, pelvic fin with 8 or 9, anal fin with 10 and caudal fin with 19 rays ( Campos, 1945 ; Garavello, 1979 ). Ground color greyish to pale yellow; three grey to black rounded blotches along lateral line, first and most conspicuous below dorsal fin. Yellowish fins ( Graça, Pavanelli, 2007 ).
