Etymology.
The specific name is a noun in apposition that refers to an expression used by people in the Brazilian State of
Minas Gerais
meaning “large eyes”. The name was used in reference to the size of the eyes in
Matta zuiuda
relative to other species in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero Iron Region.
Diagnosis.
Matta zuiuda
is separated from most other
Matta
species by having two large eyes and ventral cheliceral projections (see
Lehtinen, 1981
, figs 297, 300;
Brescovit, 2005
, figs 1, 4).
Matta zuiuda
is further separated from
M. hambletoni
and
M. angelomachadoi
by the less elongate posterior region of carapace (
Fig. 2B
, compare with
Lehtinen, 1981
, fig. 297) and by females with a seminal receptacle bearing a slender distal area (
Fig. 1F
, see
Lehtinen, 1981
, fig. 310;
Brescovit, 2005
, fig. 21).
Description.
Male
(
Holotype
, IBSP 186527). Cephalothorax and abdomen red-brown. Legs orange with yellow patellae (
Fig. 1A
). Total length 1.34. Carapace projected, 5.3 long, 0.47 wide, with rugose surface (
Figs 2A
̄B). Sternal surface reticulate. Clypeus oblique, long, five times the diameter of the eyes (
Fig. 2B
). Eye diameters and interdistances: AME 0.04, AME-AME 0.08; with smooth subocular furrow (
Fig. 2C
). Cheliceral apophysis short, conical, with long setae and translucent median lamina (
Figs 2D
̄F). Leg measurements: I—femur 0.42/ patella 0.15/ tibia 0.32/ metatarsus 0.2/ tarsus 0.22/ total 1.31; II—0.39/ 0.14/ 0.29/ 0.19/ 0.24/ 1.25; III— 0.32/ 0.13/ 0.24/ 0.18/ 0.22/ 1.09; IV—0.43/ 0.15/ 0.39/ 0.26/ 0.21/ 1.44. Leg formula 4123. Leg I, spination: tibiae with two or three distal, prolateral, and retrolateral spines; metatarsi with small, ventral, basal spine and retrolateral basal spine on tubercle (
Fig. 4A
̄B). Trichobothria with a single, large transverse plate opposite a pair of smaller, short plates (
Fig. 4E
).
Abdomen
ovoid with a large sclerotized plate covering the dorsal surface (
Fig. 1D
); ventrally covered by four sclerotized plates (
Fig. 1A
).
Abdominal plates:
a large pulmonary plate with rounded anterior margin, surrounding pedicel and oval book-lung plates, followed posteriorly by a narrow postgenital plate, largest preanal plate, and conical anal plate surrounding spinnerets; laterally with four pairs of narrow plates, most ventral pair shorter than others (
Fig. 4D
), and a line of four epiandrous spigots (
Fig. 4E
).
Male palp:
femur with four long setae and bearing median short and projected plates (
Fig. 4C
); tibia strongly swollen, rounded posteriorly; cymbium small; bulb pear-shaped, with conductor with elevated border, involving; the base of the long and sinuous embolus, enlarged at the apex, with an acute, laminar projection (
Figs 1B
̄C, 3ĀF).
Female
(
Paratype
, IBSP 186514). Coloration as in male. Total length 1.38. Carapace as in male (
Fig. 1D
), 0.53 long, 0.46 wide. Clypeus and sternum as in male (
Fig. 5D
). Eye diameters and interdistances: AME 0.04, AME- AME 0.08. Chelicerae with small basal and conical apophysis, with ventral translucent hyaline keel, as in male (
Figs 5A
̄B). Leg measurements: I—femur 0.44/ patella 0.14/ tibia 0.31/ metatarsus 0.2/ tarsus 0.25/ total 1.34; II—0.43/ 0.14/ 0.25/ 0.2/ 0.23/ 1.25; III—0.31/ 0.13/ 0.23/ 0.18/ 0.22/ 1.24; IV—0.45/ 0.16/ 0.4/ 0.24/ 0.26/ 1.51. Leg formula 4123. Pedipalpal tarsus ending in acuminate, smooth pit (
Fig. 5H
).
Abdomen
with plates as in males, but the lateral largest (
Fig. 5E
̄F). Vulvae externally with V-shaped receptacle (
Fig. 1E
); narrow post genital plate and thin copulatory opening (
Fig. 5G
). Internally with enlarged receptaculum and narrow copulatory ducts; central process straight, elongate and with a globose dorsal fold of the uterus externus (
Fig. 1F
).

Natural history
.
Matta zuiuda
is known from caves in the carbonate and ferruginous formations. While all specimens have been collected in caves thus far, we hypothesize that they also occur in the hypogeous edaphic environment.
Distribution.
Caves in the State of
Minas Gerais
,
Brazil
(
