Cerambyx scabrosus
Olivier, 1790
Potemnemus loriai
Breuning, 1956
: 245
nov. syn.
Potemnemus trituberculatus
Breuning, 1942

nov. syn.
(assumed to be a synonym by
De

but not formalized).
Notes.
There are several misspellings and incorrect use of names:
Cerambix scabrosus
Olivier, 1795
;
Potemnemus sabrosus
Thomson, 1864
(sic);
Protemnemus scabrosus
Pascoe, 1866
(nec
Olivier, 1790
);
Protemnemus scabrosus
Vollenhoven, 1871
(nec
Olivier, 1790
).
The
type
is lost and, as far as we know, the original description only refers to one male specimen, which would have been the
holotype
if found. Since we have found no other specimens from Olivier’s collection, the original drawing (
Olivier 1795; Plate 10,
Fig. 70
) has been designated as
lectotype
in agreement with the International code of zoological nomenclature (ICZN 1999).
Type
locality
is
Indonesia
,
Moluccas
(
Olivier 1795
).

Notes.
the specimen referred to as a

P. trimaculatus
sp. res.
(photo examination).
P. trituberculatus

is a junior synonym of
P. scabrosus
(priority principle according to ICZN).

Re-description:
a large and relatively broad (BL = 32.0–49.0 mm), ash-grey species with body approximately 2.8 x longer than wide (
Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5
).
Antennae:
relatively short in females and relatively long in males, extending beyond apices by about 3–4 antennomeres in females and by about 4–5 antennomeres in males.
Thorax:
pronotum with three broad and strongly elevated tubercles medially on pronotum (
Fig. 45
). The tubercles are mostly of similar height, and the middle tubercle is rarely reduced in height or even absent (
Figs. 4, 5
). The surface on pronotum below the median tubercles is heavily wrinkled (most pronounced in larger specimens). There is a very weak, longitudinal and ochreous line on pronotum, visible anteriorly and posteriorly of the broad tubercles on the middle of pronotum.
Elytra:
convex, and the elevated transverse ridge on the middle of elytra is distinct.
Mostly ash-grey with entire epipleuron light brown (
Figs. 1–3
). Elytra have one uniform and rounded or squareformed dark brown patch with plush-like pubescence which surrounds scutellum. The patch is only slightly elongated along the suture, and two additional dark brown patches are situated laterally near apices. Elytra are strongly narrowing towards apex in males (
Fig. 1
). Spines scattered along lateral carina on elytra mostly fine, but sometimes longer and “hook-like. Spines surrounding the triangular patch around scutellum are mostly rounded.
Legs:
relatively long and supplied with mottled brownish and greyish pubescence.
Venter:
prosternal process pubescent at base, with a large, broad, and rounded tubercle anteriorly. Mesosternum with a small, white patch laterally. The remaining parts of venter have short, brownish pubescence.
Male
genitalia:
aedeagus (about
6.1 mm
long) relatively short and weakly curved towards apex (
Fig. 51
), with dorsal surface distinctly wrinkled medially (
Fig. 52
) and sometimes along the entire surface. Parameres are broad and about 2.0 mm long, and the inner margin evenly straight towards apex (
Fig. 53
). Apex rounded with relatively long setae attached ventrally, and the projection at base between the two parameres sharp and pointing (
Fig. 53
). Tergite VIII (about
3.5 mm
long) almost square with anterior margin slightly concave and covered with relatively fine and short setae, surface is glabrous medially (
Fig. 54
). The colour of male genitalia is brown to dark brown.
Remarks.
P. scabrosus
is most similar to
P. trimaculatus
sp. res.,
but is easily separated by the three large and raised tubercles medially on pronotum, the absence of a brown patch medially on pronotum, and the rounded brown patch covering scutellum.
P. scabrosus
is a widespread species occurring in the
Moluccas
and on the western and eastern parts of the island of New
Guinea
(
Fig. 81
).
