Orthogonius xanthomerus
Redtenbacher, 1867
This species was described from specimens collected by Ritter von Frauenfeld in
Hong Kong
. It was also collected by both Champion and Bowring prior to 1855. This is likely to be the species Bowring mentions in a 1855 letter to Adam White (Anon 1855). "the other day I got my first specimen of the only beetle in poor Champion's collection, which I did not possess when he left
China
, an
Orthogonius
; I don't know whether it has been described."
Gemminger & Harold (1868)
,
Chaudoir (1871b)
, Andrewes (1924) and
Bousquet (2003d)
also list this species for
Hong Kong
.
Orthogonius
sp.
A number of specimens were quite different from
O. xanthomerus
. According to Mingyi Tian (pers. comm.) their genital structures are somewhat intermediate between several species from
China
and southeast Asia.
