Material examined. Table 2 ; Figure 5J . Deep body; terminal mouth terminal; premaxilla with 10–12 teeth, dentary with 10–18, and maxilla with 15–23 teeth. Lateral line complete, with 36–40 pored scales; transversal series above lateral line with 7–9 scale rows and below with 6–8 scale rows. Dorsal fin with 12, pecto- ral fin with 14–17, pelvic fin with 9, anal fin with 28–33 and caudal fin with 19, total rays ( Menezes 1987 ). Ground color yellowish to silvery; black rounded humeral spot with diffuse dorsal and ventral extensions, followed by second, inconspicuous humeral spot; silvery longitudinal stripe on flank (dark in preserved specimens).
