Habitat preference:
According to
Beier (1963a)
, this species lives under tree bark in floodplains, in leaf litter of bushes which are somewhat protected from floods. In other parts of is range, it is often a distinctively maritime species (
Legg & Jones 1988
;
Tooren 2005
), which can be found under coastal stones and in rock crevices. In
Slovakia
,
Krajčovičová
et al.
(2012)
collected it by beating branches, and it was also reported from oak-hornbeam forests (
Christophoryová 2013
), and from heaps of decomposing material (
Kaňuchová
et al
. 2015
), and from bird nests (
Christophoryová
et al
. 2011d
), mammal nests (
Christophoryová
et al
. 2017b
), compost heaps (
Christophoryová
et al
. 2017a
), from dead wood and tree hollows, and under tree bark (
Christophoryová
et al
. 2017c
). It was found under tree bark in
Albania
(
Červená
et al
. 2021a
). In
Hungary
it has been found on tree trunks and in softwood grove (
Novák 2013a
), and in beech-hornbeam forest (Novák 2018).
Muster
et al
. (2024)
reported it from the country from localities corresponding strongly with areas of salt-affected soils and inland salt habitats. During the present study, it was found in the following habitats: softwood grove, spruce forest, swamp, alder forest, under litter in drift of sand, oak forest of leass, willow forest, poplar-willow forest, under bark of poplar tree, under alder tree, sifted from reed debris, and lakeside.
Remarks:
Dactylochelifer latreillii
is widespread across
Hungary
.The taxon
Chelifer tegulatus
Tömösváry, 1882
was synonymized with
Rhacochelifer peculiaris
by
Beier (1932b)
, however, examination of the
type
specimens has revealed that they belong to
D. latreillii
. Furthermore, the specimens identified by
Tömösváry (1882a)
as
Chelifer subruber
and
C
.
disjunctus
also belong to this species, as well as the specimens identified by
Tömösváry (1882a)
and Daday (1889) as
C
.
peculiaris
. As
D. degeerii
and
D. ninnii
were recently reinstated to species status from being junior synonymies of
D. latreillii
, and the presence of both sepcies were reported from
Hungary
by
Muster
et al
. (2024)
, the revision of all Hungarian materieal earlier attributed to
D. latreillii
will be necessary in the future.
