Generic diagnosis (adopted from Hodgson, 1994 ). Slide-mounted specimens more or less oval but with a distinct indentation at each stigmatic cleft. Dorsal setae spinose, of 2 distinct sizes: (i) larger spinose setae confined to each submedian line of pores anterior to anal plates; and (ii) shorter spinose setae scattered on dorsum or present within lateral latticework. Dorsal pores of 2 types : (i) a flat circular to slightly oval simple pore present in each submedian pore line and associated with marginal setae; and (ii) a minute pore with a distinct inner filament present in submedian pore line and elsewhere. Dorsal tubercles present, closely associated with marginal spines; dorsal tubular ducts absent. Venter with quinquelocular pores forming a band between each spiracle and corresponding stigmatic cleft. Multilocular pores confined to venter on abdominal segments and sometimes on thorax, including prothorax. Ventral tubular ducts forming a distinct marginal band but sparse on mid-abdominal region. Marginal setae stoutly and sharply spinose, situated close to each other. Stigmatic clefts developed, each containing more than 3 spines of different sizes. Anal plates together roughly quadrate, each plate with 4 or 5 setae dorsally; anal fold with 2 pairs of small thin setae on anterior margin plus 1 pair of setae on lateral margin. Antennae each 8 segmented, either reduced with obscure segmentation or well developed. Legs either reduced or well developed, each without a tibiotarsal sclerosis; claws either without a denticle or with a small one; claw digitules similar.
