_MAM 1698 includes a relatively well-preserved skin, missing some hairs in the rostral region (
Fig. 4
b), a skull missing the basicranium and the posterior braincase, and two mandibular rami, with the coronoid missing on the left ramus. The
holotype
, by monotypy, was collected by
Sellow
and
Olfers.
Lichtenstein
(1830) stated that the specimen came from “
der Gegend
von
Rio de Janeiro
”, and the label and
Generalkatalog
read “
Rio de Janeiro
.
” Thus, we can safely assume that the
type
locality of
Mus nigrita
lies in the state of
Rio de Janeiro
.
