The holotype , by monotypy, was collected by Sellow and Olfers. Lichtenstein (1830) stated that the specimen came from “ der Gegend von Rio de Janeiro ”, and the label and Generalkatalog read “ Rio de Janeiro . ” Thus, we can safely assume that the type locality of Mus nigrita lies in the state of Rio de Janeiro .
