Petiole squamiform, the anterior and the posterior surface meeting at an angle but only partially forming a crest (Fig. 7).</paragraph> <paragraph id="BBA3376CE76563162E7286478BD45173" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">2. MPI <80; third segment round in cross-section; erect hairs on third segment not longer than 1-5 x maximum diameter of third segment, pilosity all over the surface.</paragraph> <paragraph id="9E7D2262827E4A28A08EF1261870F5D2" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">3. Uniform coloured either yellow or a dark chestnut-brown.</paragraph> <paragraph id="F72F5E399FDEF6D09A57BC01F2522AEB" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">4. Uniform brownish-black or with a reddish or yellow gaster.</paragraph> <paragraph id="F46B85784ED8DBEC2595A01326BB412D" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">2. Subgenital plate short (SPI <125); with two distal, lateral finger-shaped processes and a median part which is variable but always present (Fig. 14).</paragraph> <paragraph id="A16130FD8C32B814FFD80F2841AE439C" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">3. Squamula caudally always projecting over the stipes and forming a distinct, pediform process pointing ventrally (Fig. 29).</paragraph> <paragraph id="DFFC27CD9507A7E8F787EA17602A8160" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">4. Sagitta with a rectangular shield (Fig. 64).</paragraph> </subSubSection> <subSubSection id="13C909A58B8EF3C186C1F57067A7627C" type="distribution"> <paragraph id="F2B48C2F6BA68C6C6983049E1A28809F" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText">Distribution</paragraph> <paragraph id="7245721D425870B178A8430A2EF04D25" pageId="16" pageNumber="1473" type="mainText"> The <taxonomicName id="0ED2661D6F88AA93BC82DBBFE33B2A25" authorityName=", Andre" authorityYear="1882" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Myrmecocystus" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF,CoL" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="pallidus">pallidus</taxonomicName> species-group includes three species all described from the vicinity of Ashkhabad and living in the central asiatic desert and semidesert biotopes, such as the Kara Kumy. <taxonomicName id="3E6588AEA042595CB730FFDAD9ED88A1" baseAuthorityName="Karavaiev" baseAuthorityYear="1910" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Cataglyphis" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="emeryi">C.emeryi</taxonomicName> lives in the Saxaul desert, and <taxonomicName id="A9A5E95E2835D58D632F352F879BF89F" authorityName=", Andre" authorityYear="1882" class="Insecta" family="Formicidae" genus="Myrmecocystus" higherTaxonomySource="GBIF,CoL" kingdom="Animalia" order="Hymenoptera" phylum="Arthropoda" rank="species" species="pallidus">pallidus</taxonomicName> constructs its nests in the sand dunes.
