REMARKS Although described as a variety, the name Serphus ( Cryptoserphus ) longitarsis var. ruficauda is made available at subspecific rank from the date of its original publication as it was published before 1961, the author expressly used the term “var.” and it was adopted as the valid name of a species before 1985, as Cryptoserphus ruficauda by Kieffer (1914) ( ICZN 1999 : arts 45.6.4, 45.6.4.1). The syntype is carded on its left side, and has the head and antennae broken off and glued on the same card. The head is in two pieces, parts of both antennae are missing, and the right hind wing is torn. The synonymy established by Townes &Townes (1981) is followed here. Serphus ( Cryptoserphus ) nigricauda
