Peromyia paliformia
Berest, 1994
—new junior synonym of
Peromyia aeratipennis
(Skuse, 1888)
Material studied:
holotype
male and
paratype
male, with the data specified in the original description (
Berest 1994
).
My re-examination of the two male specimens representing
P. paliformia
revealed that they belong to
P. aeratipennis
, a species better known under the junior synonym,
P. m u s c o r um
(Kieffer, 1895) (see
Jaschhof 2010
). These specimens are in such poor shape that they should not have been used for taxonomic description. The tegmen is not simply “paliform” as described by
Berest (1994: fig. 2.2)
, but has the subquadrate ventral shield characteristic of
P. aeratipennis
(
Jaschhof 1998: fig. 219c, as
muscorum
). The gonostyli, described by
Berest (1994)
to be “toothless”, seem to lack the small apical brush of large microtrichia typically present in
P. aeratipennis
; however, this brush can be sparse and difficult to spot, especially when gonostyli are not in the right position. The microscope slides holding the
type
specimens of
P. paliformia
bear the notation “!muscorum”, possibly in B.M. Mamaev’s handwriting.
