DISTRIBUTION: From NE Angola throughout Zaire , Uganda , Kenya , and south through Tanzania , to Malawi , N Zambia , and N Mozambique ; an isolated segment in Ethiopia . See map in Dieterlen (1976b) . SYNONYMS: aquilus , brevicaudus , brunneus , chrysopus , laticeps , major , margarettae , rita, rubecula , simensis , zaphiri , zena . COMMENTS: Subgenus Lophuromys . Chromosomal data for sample from Burundi was reported by Maddalena et al. (1989) . The appreciable character variation among samples probably reflects more than one species.
