, however no
syntypes

, since it was mentioned as synonym of
Telemiades ceramina
Herrich–Schäffer, 1869
. The male

specimen is housed at
ZMHU
with the same labels of
T. ceramina
.
Telemiades megalloides
Schaus, 1902
was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from
Peru
. Schaus attested that the type specimen has the No. 5972

Diagnosis.
FW length: males
19–21 mm
(n=20) and females
20–22 mm
(n=4).
Telemiades penidas
is distinguished from the other species of the genus by the following characters: FW with four triangular hyaline doscal spots; uncus with distal margin rounded, ventrally slightly curved and with one pair of truncated lobes; lamella antevaginalis symmetrical and with irregular margin of lateral expansions.
Variation.
The ground color could be darker in some specimens. Also, some specimens could have larger spots on both wings.
Natural History.
Immatures have been reported on
Inga
sp. (Moss 1941). Several males were collected using the Ahrenholz technique (
Lamas
et al.
1993
) at National Park of Serra do Divisor, Mâncio Lima,
Acre
,
Brazil
.
Distribution.
Telemiades penidas
occurs in forested areas of Amazonia, with records in
Colombia
,
Ecuador
,
Peru
,
Bolivia
,
Venezuela
,
Guyana
,
French Guiana
,
Suriname
, and
Brazil
.
Taxonomic discussion.
Eudamus penidas
Hewitson, 1867
was transferred to
Telemiades
by Herrich–Schäffer (1869). In the same work, Herrich–Schäffer described
Telemiades ceramina
and later
Plötz (1882)
considered
Telegonus mygdon
Möschler, 1877
and
Telemiades uncinata
Plötz, 1882
as synonyms of it.
Evans (1953)
synonymized
T. ceramina
,
T. mygdon
,
T. uncinata
,
Telemiades megalloides
Schaus, 1902
and
Pythonides hoyti
Weeks, 1906
with
T. penidas
, all of which have been adopted to this day. Analysis of the existing
type
material of the species mentioned above supports the synonym with
T. penidas
.
Plötz (1882)
described
Proteides aesopus
based on an unknown number of specimens from “Java”. After its description,
Shepard (1931)
transferred
P. aesopus
to
Telemiades
and Evans (1947) synonymized it with
T. penidas
without outlining the reasons for it. Plötz’s specimens are supposedly deposited at ZMHU and ZSM but it was not possible to find specimens of
P. aesopus
there. The characteristics in the description of
P. aesopus
agree with
T. penidas
and, for this reason, the synonymy of the former with the latter remains valid. However, it is possible that “Java” is not an accurate locality for the species. The
type
locality of other species described by Plötz were erroneously interpreted from the original publication:
Libra anatolica
(Plötz, 1883)
described from “Asia” (the species occur in south
Brazil
) and
Pyrgus
(
Syrichtus
[
sic
])
argina
Plötz, 1884 (now synonymous with
Amblyscirtes hegon
(Scudder, 1863))
described from “Brisbane” [
Austrália
] (occurs in North America).
