Croton tinctorius
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
2
: 1004. 1753
.
"Habitat Monspelii." RCN: 7272.
Lectotype
(Radcliffe-Smith in Nasir & Ali,
Fl. Pakistan
172: 50. 1986):
Loefling
s.n.
, Herb. Linn. No. 1140.5 (
LINN
)
.
Current name:
Chrozophora tinctoria
(L.) A. Juss.
(
Euphorbiaceae
).
Note:
Specific epithet spelled
"tinctorium"
in the protologue.
Prain (in
Bull. Misc. Inform. Kew
1918: 49. 1918) discusses this name and gives (pp. 50-53) an exhaustive account of the pre-Linnaean literature. Radcliffe-Smith (in Meikle,
Fl. Cyprus
2: 1450. 1985) indicated a type at LINN but did not distinguish between sheets 1140.5 and 1140.6. As they are evidently not part of a single gathering, Art. 9.15 does not apply.
