Range T. b. cristatus Biak, Supiori, Rani, Owi, Yapen. Status Regular visitor. Common year-round in New Guinea waters (Beehler & Pratt 2016). In Biak waters moderately common; regularly observed perched on exposed coral reefs. Also seen offshore in mixed flocks with other terns ( Sternidae spp.), boobies ( Sula spp. ) and frigatebirds ( Fregata spp. ). 6 August 2015 : five off Rani (N. Voaden, eBird checklist S24512191); 13 January 1994 : two off Owi (P. Gregory in litt . 2000).
