Genus Maliqua Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty 1997: 368 (larva and imago; type species Afroptilum plumosum Wuillot, in Wuillot & Gillies 1993 ); synonymized with Potamocloeon by Kluge (2018: 117). Part of genus Cloeodes (= Potamocloeon = Maliqua ): Jacobus, McCafferty & Gattolliat 2006: 131 . Genus Potamocloeon : Salles & Gattolliat & Sartori 2016: 108 (larva and imago). Type species: Cloeon dentatum Kimmins 1956 . Species composition of Potamocloeon . This genus contains African species originally described under the names dentatum Kimmins 1956 [ Cloeon ], plumosum Wuillot (in Wuillot & Gillies) 1993 [ Afroptilum ], abdallahi McCafferty 2000 [ Maliqua ] and the new species described in this paper. FIGURES 1–10. Potamocloeon dentatum . 1, head and thorax of male imago from Uganda; 2, its abdominal sterna and terga; 3, abdominal sterna and terga of male imago from Mali; 4, abdominal sterna and terga of male subimago from Uganda; 5, hind leg of male imago; 6, subimaginal mesonotum; 7–10, genitals: 7, holotype; 8–9, specimens from Mali; 10, specimen from Uganda. The species names dentatum [ Cloeon ], plumosum [ Afroptilum ] and abdallahi [ Maliqua ] are regarded as subjective synonyms ( Jacobus et al . 2006 ). Wuillot and Gillies (1993) did not originally compare Afroptilum plumosum with Cloeon dentatum ; male imagines of these forms have identical structure of genitals, that testifies that they really belong to one and the same species. Maliqua abdallahi McCafferty 2000 was originally described as larvae and compared with the larval description of Afroptilum plumosum ; most of the reported differences between these two species are inconsistent. However, it is possible that Potamocloeon abdallahi (McCafferty 2000) is a valid species characterized by colorless tracheae of tergalii, while Potamocloeon dentatum (= plumosum ) and the new species P. edentatum sp n. have well pigmented tracheae. The validity of P. abdallahi is questionable, while its imago is unknown. In addition to these continental African species, four species were described from Madagascar and originally placed in the genus Cloeodes : portabilis Lugo-Ortiz et al . 1999 [ Cloeodes ], bicoloratus Gattolliat 2001 [ Cloeodes ], freitagae Gattolliat 2001 [ Cloeodes ], pseudogladius Gattolliat 2001 [ Cloeodes ]. Salles et al . (2016) placed them in the genus Potamocloeon as a separate subgenus Aquaediva Salles, Gattolliat & Sartori 2016 .
